Looking for an internship where you'll gain valuable skills and contacts, make a difference every day, and only have to make coffee if you personally plan to drink it? Join us! Open Books internships are unpaid but in no way unrewarding. You'll enjoy flexible part-time hours, all the books you can read, and a casual but professional work environment with friendly and appreciative coworkers, students, and partners in a colorful, candy-filled River North loft office.

Book Department
The Book department is always looking for strong interns with an interest in learning about various elements of running a social venture through book collection and online/event sales.

The Book department, which operates out of a Lincoln Park warehouse and all over the city, welcomes applications from interested interns. The internship includes:
* Book collection for grants, online sales and our bookstore
* Listing, managing and processing online sales postings
* Assisting with online customers
* Donor management
* Managing a large inventory of 100,000+ books
* Being an ambassador and representative to donors and the local community
* Creating partnerships with other organizations and businesses
* Managing large book drives with local and national partners
Please note: We are collecting books and there is a physical component to this internship.
Ideal candidates will possess strong writing and communication skills, ability to perform under deadline, superior organizational skills and a passion for making a real impact on our community. If you are interested in books and a career in the nonprofit sector, we would be thrilled to receive your submission!

Team Lit The Literacy department is always looking for lively interns with an interest in hands-on learning about various elements of literacy programming.

The Literacy department, which operates out of the River North office and all over the city, welcomes applications from interested interns. The internship includes:
* Leading creative writing workshops for students of all ages
* Managing volunteers and students at Open Books Buddies sites
* Conducting important research about trends in literacy
* Community outreach
* Curriculum and program development
Ideal candidates will possess:
* An enthusiastic and positive attitude
* Experience or an interest in developing public speaking skills
* Experience working with youth
* Passion for the mission of Open Books

Marketing Department
The Open Books Marketing department is looking for energetic interns with an interest in literacy, nonprofit marketing, and event planning.

Responsibilities of the Marketing intern include (but are not limited to) the following:
* A variety of in-house communications including copy-writing for flyers, emails, blogs, and newsletters
* Project-based tasks to promote book drives and book pickups in the Chicagoland area
* Assisting with the promotion of various events, from storytimes to a Spring fundraiser
* Developing a comprehensive micro-volunteering flyering package including maps of targeted areas for promotion, lists of businesses where we can post flyers, and a schedule of suggested “beats.”
Ideal candidates will possess:
* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
* The ability to work independently, multitask, and exercise good judgment
* An enthusiastic attitude and strong work ethic
* Desire to work in the nonprofit sector and improve literacy in Chicago
* Strong social skills and the confidence to represent the organization at external events
Interns will be asked to commit to at least 20 hours per week. The internship will run from February through June. Internship applications are due by January 16th and interviews will be scheduled in late January.

The Open Books Store
The Open Books store is always looking for passionate interns with an infectious interest in books and selling them.

Are you the type of person who delights at your guests looking through your books, but spends hours re-organizing them after they leave? Do you save money on your heating bill because the books covering your wall act as insulation? When you see someone using a Kindle on the bus, do you wish it had a dust jacket on it so you could see what they are reading and strike up a conversation about it? Do you think of books as the ultimate social media? Are you fascinated by the rapidly evolving book industry? If so, you may be perfect for a position in the Open Books store!
The Open Books store is currently looking for a few good interns who wish to learn the ins and outs of running a nonprofit used bookstore while enriching lives through reading, writing, and the STORED-UP power of used books! Intern responsibilities include:
* Providing blue-ribbon customer service including greeting shoppers, locating sections or titles, recommending books, and helping with transactions
* Assisting with daily store processes and procedures including sorting books and merchandise, stocking shelves, creating displays, and cleaning
* Regular posting on the Open Books store blog
* Promoting Open Books' mission, programs, and opportunities for involvement
* Helping to plan and execute events such as storytime, book clubs, author sessions in the store, sales, and more
* Raising awareness in the community in creative and awesome ways
Store interns will have the unique opportunity to have direct contact with the general public while affecting change, excitement, and lasting memories in their community! Qualifications include strong communication skills, an outgoing personality, superior organizational skills, and an infectious passion for the written word. Though we are never at a loss for something to read, we can't wait to read your application!
